This week’s report continues our journey through Iamblichus’ De Mysteriis, Book IX—one of the richest and most enigmatic texts on the personal daimon in the Neoplatonic tradition.

We began by grappling with an apparent paradox: the “master of the house” is said to be unknowable, yet knowledge of it is necessary to discover one’s daimon. Iamblichus’ response? While difficult, the daimon is not unknowable—and astrology, though fallible, is not our only tool. Sacred theurgy opens a higher path.

What follows is a dense and beautiful unfolding of the daimon’s role as cosmic mediator, legislator of the soul’s life, and divine giver of the first principles of thought and desire. We explored the possibility of transformation—from being ruled by a daimon to being guided by a god. And we reflected on what it means to align our life with a divine pattern that is singular, transcendent, and irreducible to mere psychological faculties.

This class was part philosophical dialogue, part close reading of a text, part joint metaphysical investigation. We touched on themes ranging from Plotinus’ idea of self-authorship to Proclus’ doctrine of realignment, and from ancient astrology to vocational discernment.

O relatório desta semana continua nossa leitura do Livro IX do De Mysteriis de Jâmblico — um dos textos mais densos e enigmáticos sobre o daimon pessoal na tradição neoplatônica.

Começamos enfrentando um paradoxo: o “mestre da casa” seria incognoscível, mas seu conhecimento seria necessário para descobrir o próprio daimon. Jâmblico responde: difícil, sim — mas não incognoscível. E mesmo que a astrologia falhe, a teurgia sagrada oferece um caminho superior.

A partir daí, seguimos um percurso denso e fascinante: o daimon como mediador cósmico, legislador da vida da alma, e doador divino dos primeiros princípios do pensamento e do desejo. Exploramos a possibilidade de transformação — de uma vida governada por um daimon para uma vida guiada por um deus. E refletimos sobre o que significa alinhar a própria vida com uma forma divina singular, transcendente e irreduzível a faculdades psicológicas.

Esta aula foi ao mesmo tempo diálogo filosófico, leitura atenta de um texto e investigação metafísica conjunta. Discutimos desde a autorialidade em Plotino até a doutrina de realinhamento de Proclo, passando por astrologia antiga e discernimento vocacional.
